A reflection on the Transfiguration and Gethsemane scenes

đŹđ§Â From the Mountain of Glory to the Garden of Agony
In the Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew, and Luke), Jesus chooses only three disciples to accompany him during certain intimate moments: Peter, James, and John. Three times, they are his privileged companions: at the raising of Jairusâs daughter, on the mountain of the Transfiguration, and in the Garden of Gethsemane.
The contrast between the last two episodes is striking:
- On the mountain (see for example Mark 9:2â10), they see Jesus transfigured in his glory. Peter is delighted; he suggests putting up three tentsâas if he wants to prolong the moment.
- In the garden (Mark 14:32â42), as Jesus is overwhelmed with distress and asks them explicitly to stay awake with him, they fall asleep. Unable to keep watch, they flee from the image of a suffering Messiah.
đ These two scenes reveal how difficult it was for the disciples to accept the idea of Christâs death. Nothing in their religious tradition had prepared them for it: the Messiah they were waiting forâa royal, saving figureâwas not supposed to die. He was expected to deliver them from Roman oppression.

Dans les Ă©vangiles synoptiques (Marc, Matthieu et Luc), JĂ©sus ne choisit que trois disciples pour lâaccompagner dans certains moments intimes : Pierre, Jacques et Jean. Trois fois, ils sont ses compagnons privilĂ©giĂ©s : Ă la rĂ©surrection de la fille de JaĂŻre, sur la montagne de la transfiguration, et au jardin de GethsĂ©mani.
Le contraste entre les deux derniers épisodes est saisissant :
- Au jardin (Marc 14,32-42), alors que JĂ©sus est bouleversĂ© et plongĂ© dans lâangoisse, et alors quâil leur demande expressĂ©ment de veiller avec lui, ils sâendorment. Incapables de veiller, ils fuient lâimage du Messie souffrant.
- Sur la montagne (voir par exemple Marc 9,2-10), ils voient Jésus transfiguré, dans sa gloire. Pierre est ravi, il propose de dresser trois tentes : il veut prolonger cette vision.
đ Ces deux scĂšnes rĂ©vĂšlent toute la difficultĂ© quâavaient les disciples Ă accepter la mort du Christ. Rien dans leur tradition ne les y prĂ©parait : le Messie quâils attendaient, un roi libĂ©rateur, ne pouvait pas mourir â il Ă©tait censĂ© les sauver du joug romain.
